Once in a lifetime experience in the birthplace of the twins, God Apollo and goddess Artemis! God Apollo is the god of the music, the arts and the lyre. Goddess Artemis was considered to be the protectress of the animals and pregnant women. We are setting off to Delos, an UNESCO world heritage monument, only half an hour on boat from Mykonos. Since Apollo and his twin sister Artemis, were born on Delos island, “no mortals were allowed to be born or die on the sacred soil of Delos” according to ancient Greeks. The island was considered sacred in the ancient times.
This is why the islands that surround Delos and form a circle (cyclos) around it are called up to nowadays, Cyclades! We are about to see the best preserved houses of the antiquity!
Furthermore we will see temples, the theater, cisterns, having the sense of an open air museum! In the actual Delos museum we will to admire all the statues and artefacts that are kept here unveiling the great history of the sacred island which captures every visitor’s interest! This is the place where also Greek prayed for fertility. We are about to learn everything about sub-fertility in ancient Greece, fertility prayers and symbols.
We wander in the capital of the most famous and scenic islands of Greece! We will explore the main town of Mykonos, called “chora” in greek. In our tour we will meet a profusion of local shops and Greek tavernas, but also finger-food restaurants owned by international chefs. We will encounter luxurious boutiques, as well as museums, old churches and monuments. We will be “lost” in its stone paved alleys and be able to enjoy its characteristic Cycladic architecture with white and blue colors in the leading role!
The beloved sugar cube houses are all over the island. Why do we have this kind of little labyrinth-streets in Cyclades and the islands of the Aegean sea? What do the numerous one aisle churches symbolise? Our visit to the traditional windmills, unique feature of the island and the Aegean Maritime museum give us a taste of its fascinating history. Highlight of our tour will be the “Little Venice”, which is the most picturesque spot on Mykonos providing a wonderful back drop for our instagram photos!
